Having clear signs that direct you to nearby fire exits will ensure that everyone can see the emergency route. Emergency lighting and signage should be placed in corridors, staircases and next to other fire-fighting equipment.
Fire doors
Fire doors can save lives, as they are designed to resist fire and protect escape routes so people can get out of the building quickly and safely. These type of doors should be clearly marked with a fire exit sign, and should never be propped open as this can make them ineffective and encourage fires to spread. Unlike normal doors, fire doors are made of heavier materials, they have a special seal that prevents and gaps from being exposed and are fitted with fire-resistant glazing.
Escape plans
It’s important that you inform your employees about the correct fire procedure, such as where to go, where the alarms are and how to use a fire extinguisher if needed. You should refresh your staff about these procedures, and designate a fire safety warden who can act as the leader if a fire was to break out. Having annual fire drills is a good way of ensuring all employees know what to do.
Depending on the type of business your own, this will determine which fire extinguishers you need - and regulations state that on every floor of a building there needs to be at least two Class A fire extinguishers. You should also make sure that everyone knows where the alarm points are, so they can raise the alarm if they spot an emergency situation.
