Organising your garage space
Garages have multiple functionalities but were once the prime place for people to store their cars. However, if you’re someone that finds your garage space contains an overspill of miscellaneous items from your house and garden, you’re not alone. Just 24% of people with access to a garage use it as a place to park their car.
Organisation is a great way of clearing out the unnecessary junk you’ve been holding onto for years too long and is also a good opportunity to repurpose your garage space into something useful for the whole family.
Organise in categories
Categorising your garage belongings is a good way of sifting through items you want to keep, throw away, sell and give to charity.
Just like you might vision a layout of a shop, you should group items based on different categories. For example; sports equipment and camping supplies in one category, tools, DIY items and paints in another. This way, you can store them all in their own unit, making them easy to find and reach when you need them.
Divide the space
Your garage is a great space to get creative with and can be used in multiple ways.
It’s a good idea to clearly define how you want to use your garage and then organise it accordingly. For example, if you’d like some space to try your hand at DIY furniture, allocate an area in the garage in which to install a workbench and choose a wall on which to hang tools. Need some more space to store laundry? Make space for shelving units so that you can easily access your clothing items and laundry products. The key is to clearly define the purpose of your garage and to give every category its own section.
Plan your storage
There are so many fun and innovative ways to store your belongings in your garage. Don’t be afraid to ‘think outside of the box’ when it comes to storage-literally. Creating spaces where tools can be hung using hooks or pinboards is an innovative way of storing your most used belongings- as well as being convenient to access. Sports equipment such as bikes can be stored above ground using steel racks, whereas household cleaning products can be stacked on standalone wire shelves. The good thing about a garage is that it’s all about practicality, so if you have a small garage with little space, you can clear the floor by storing items on the wall or above your head. This way, you’ll have a lot more room to manoeuvre, and perhaps even space to fit your car during the colder months!
