Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure in their home and you’ll naturally want to protect your property if you’ve invested a lot of time and money into it. Many people wonder whether their home security is enough, but they might feel wary of not wanting to go overboard. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to improve your home security, from a full home security system, to everyday tips that will help to protect your valuables.

If you’ve been thinking about improving your home security for the new year, read on for our top tips to help deter thieves and protect your property.

Keep valuables out of sight

It might sound obvious, but many people don’t think twice about leaving home with their flatscreen TV or expensive laptop on full display. The majority of break ins are opportunistic and not planned in advance, so don’t give thieves any reason to target your property. Keep any expensive items away from windows and draw your curtains if you’re going out for the evening.

It’s also a good idea to keep boxes for valuable or sought after items out of sight, especially just after Christmas. An empty box for the latest games console or expensive laptop can act as an advertisement for thieves, so keep them inside until recycling day.

Don’t forget the windows

Many of us invest in secure locks for our front doors or sophisticated security systems, but these measures don’t offer much protection if you neglect your windows. Statistics show that a quarter of thieves will attempt to break a window to gain entry and many more simply enter through an unlocked or open window.

Ensure that all your windows have locks (especially if you live in an older property) and always close and secure all windows before you leave. This includes first and second floor windows too; it might feel safe to leave them open but one study found that 23% of burglars gained entry through a first floor window. If you’re looking to make a more permanent investment, consider upgrading your windows to double glazing.

Double glazed glass is much stronger, almost impossible to break and the air gap in between the panes also acts as a shock absorber. Double glazing will significantly improve the security of your home, plus there are further benefits including reduced heating bills and less noise pollution.

Secure garage doors

Your garage door is another common point of entry for thieves, but many homeowners overlook their garage when it comes to security. In some cases, your garage may be connected to your home, allowing thieves access, or they could steal valuable tools or equipment stored in the garage itself.

If your garage door is rusty or the locks have seen better days, then it's time for an upgrade. Roller garage doors are one of the most secure options available as they don’t have an obvious point of entry. Many are also electronic, making the door almost impermeable from the outside and allowing the door to be opened by remote control only.

Electronic garage doors are also much more convenient for homeowners and you can enter and exit your garage at the touch of a button. If you can’t afford to replace your garage door in its entirety, consider adding new secure locks or installing a security camera above the garage door entrance.

Upgrade your locks

Upgrading your window and door locks is one of the easiest, most cost effective ways to secure your property. As mentioned, most burglaries are opportunistic, so don’t give thieves an easy chance by leaving windows unlocked or a front door that’s easily forced open.

Back doors are another common point of entry, as their locks tend to be weaker than those used on front doors. Don’t neglect your back door; increase security by adding a second lock or deadbolt that can be locked from the inside. A Patlock is another great option if you have French double doors. These locks work by holding the internal handles securely and restricting movement of the external handles. They can be easily fitted and removed as required and come with tamper resistant mechanisms for added security.

The right lighting

A sudden light can be enough to deter thieves considering a break in, so invest in motion activated lights to help protect your property. Place motion-activated security lights at key entrance points, such as above the front door, the back door and above the garage. A well-lit property gives thieves less opportunity to hide under cover of darkness, plus there’ll be no more fumbling in the dark for your keys.

Home security systems

There’s a wide range of home security systems available on the market, from a full CCTV system to a simple security alarm. The type of system you choose will depend on your requirements, including the size of your home and the level of protection you’re after.

Smart cameras are a popular option for the modern home owner and they can be linked directly to your smartphone. You’ll get a notification if movement is detected and you can also review footage or watch livestreams remotely if you’re away from home. These systems are a good option if you spend a lot of time away from home or want that extra peace of mind.

Other options include night vision cameras, two in one camera and spotlight systems, CCTV kits and security alarms. The visual sight of a security alarm is enough to deter most thieves, making this an affordable option for those on a budget. Some home insurers even offer a discount on certain approved alarms, so it’s worth speaking to your provider.

Fences and gates

Fences and gates give additional privacy to your property and prevent potential thieves from setting foot on the premises. If you already have a gate or fencing, check that it’s still in good condition, especially if it’s timber. Rotting or missing fence panels leave your home and garden vulnerable to break ins and gaps in fencing allows intruders to scope out the property. Consider installing a metal fence and gate if you’re looking for maximum security or if your wooden fence has seen better days.

Metal fences come in a range of stylish designs and they can increase the kerb appeal of your property, while keeping it secure. Homeowners should also check their gates regularly and make sure that the lock, bolts and hinges are secure. It’s a good idea to add a second lock if you want to improve security without replacing your gate entirely
